Booking and checking in
Appointments for an examination, diagnostic test or consultation are booked by phone. For radiology (MRI, CT, X-ray, ultrasound), the number is 018 530 530, and for the hospital it is 069 530 530 9.
When booking, say which examination you need. Also ask whether any special preparation is required, for example for a contrast scan or blood tests, and whether you need a referral or a doctor's recommendation. For CT scans and X-rays, which use X-ray radiation, a doctor assesses whether the scan is justified, so bring a referral or doctor's recommendation stating the body area and the reason for the scan.
According to the opening hours published on the website, appointments are booked and patients are seen Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 20:00 and on Saturdays from 09:00 to 15:00. No appointments are booked on Sundays. It is best to arrive about ten minutes before your appointment to allow time for check-in and registration of your details, and about 15 minutes early for an MRI scan, to complete the safety questionnaire. At reception, give your full name and the examination you are booked for.
These instructions are for booked appointments. In an emergency, call the emergency medical service on 194.
What to bring
Please bring:
- your identity card or another identity document
- previous medical reports and discharge summaries relating to the reason for your visit
- earlier scans (MRI, CT, X-ray) on CD or USB stick, together with the written report
- a list of the medicines you take regularly, with doses, especially blood thinners and medicines for diabetes
- your private (voluntary) health insurance card or policy, if you have one
- a referral or doctor's recommendation, if you have been given one
- the card or documentation for your implant or implanted device, if you have one
Before an MRI scan, be sure to say when booking if you have a pacemaker or another implanted device (defibrillator, drug pump, neurostimulator, cochlear implant), metal parts left after surgery, or metal fragments in your body, especially in the eye. With some devices, the scan is not possible or requires special preparation, and the decision is made by the radiologist. Also say if you are pregnant or could be pregnant, if you have previously had a reaction to a contrast agent, or if you have kidney disease.
Before a CT scan or X-ray, also say if you are pregnant or could be pregnant. Leave jewellery at home; you will usually need to remove clothing with metal parts before the scan.
Can a consultation and diagnostic tests be done in the same visit?
Where possible, a specialist consultation and the necessary diagnostic tests can be done in the same visit. Radiology and the laboratory are at the same address as the hospital doctors' consulting rooms, so when booking you can ask for the appointments to be scheduled one after another.
Examples of how this usually works:
- a consultation with a surgeon and an ultrasound scan or blood tests requested by the surgeon
- a consultation with a urologist and an ultrasound scan of the urinary tract
- a gynaecological examination and laboratory tests
- a scan (ultrasound, X-ray, CT or MRI) recommended in advance by a doctor; ask when booking when the report will be ready
Whether this is possible depends on the doctors' schedules, the preparation needed for certain tests and the doctor's assessment of what is really necessary. For some blood tests and some scans you need to arrive fasting, so check this by phone before your visit as well.
If you have diabetes or take medicines regularly, ask how to take your medication that morning, especially if you will be spending several hours at the hospital. Do not stop your regular medication on your own initiative. Bring something to eat for after your tests.
Companions, waiting and going home
If you are coming with a companion, ask when booking where they can wait during the examination, scan or operation. The Maja Medical group also includes Maja Rooftop, a café bar and restaurant. Ask when booking where it is and whether it is open at the time of your appointment.
After general or spinal anaesthesia and after sedation, including an MRI scan under sedation, you are usually advised not to drive, operate machinery or drink alcohol for at least 24 hours. So arrange in advance for someone to take you home and stay with you for the first day. If you are going home by taxi, your companion should travel with you. After some operations, for example on the legs or the abdominal wall, driving may be restricted for longer, as advised by the surgeon. The anaesthetist or surgeon will give you specific instructions for going home, depending on the procedure.
If you need help getting around, for example a wheelchair, let us know when booking.
