Orthopaedic examination for children

An examination with Prof. Dragoljub Živanović, a specialist in paediatric surgery with a special interest in paediatric orthopaedics and traumatology. The doctor talks with the parent, examines the child and watches how they stand and walk. At the end, the doctor explains the findings and suggests the next steps.

Baby hips

A hip check is part of the preventive check-ups for babies. At the orthopaedic examination the doctor examines the hips, and the hip ultrasound is done at Maja Radiology, usually in the first months of life, while the hip joint can still be seen well on ultrasound. For an older baby, the doctor may suggest an X-ray. The doctor decides when the examination and any follow-up should take place.

Feet and walking

Assessment of the shape of the feet, the arch and the way the child walks, including toe walking and in-toeing (feet turning inwards). Flat feet are common in young children and are usually part of normal development. The doctor assesses whether monitoring is needed.

Legs and knees

Assessment of leg alignment, such as knock knees and bow legs, and of differences in leg length. Bow legs in young children and knock knees at pre-school age are often part of normal growth. The doctor assesses whether a follow-up appointment or imaging is needed.

Spine and posture

Examination of the back and posture in school-age children and young people. The doctor checks whether the shoulders and pelvis are level and examines the spine while the child bends forward (forward bend test). If needed, the doctor suggests imaging and a monitoring plan.

Fontanelle and thymus ultrasound

Head ultrasound through the fontanelle (the soft spot on the top of the head) is done in babies while the fontanelle is still open enough, usually in the first months of life. Thymus ultrasound shows this gland in the upper part of the chest. Both scans are done at Maja Radiology, usually on the recommendation of a paediatrician, and do not use radiation.

X-ray and bone age assessment

A bone age assessment is an X-ray, usually of the left hand and wrist. It helps the doctor estimate the child's bone age and is used alongside growth monitoring. X-rays of bones and joints are done on a doctor's recommendation at Maja Radiology.

In detail

What is available for children at Maja Hospital

At Maja Hospital in Niš, children can have an orthopaedic examination and imaging at Maja Radiology: ultrasound and X-ray. Paediatrician appointments, the well-child clinic and routine health checks are provided at Maja Health Centre, which is in the same building at Vizantijski bulevar 39. This way, a parent and child come to a single address and can take the imaging results back to the doctor who recommended the scan.

Paediatric orthopaedics: the most common reasons for an examination

Paediatric orthopaedics monitors the development of the bones, joints and muscles from birth until growth is complete. Parents most often come for a preventive hip check in babies, or because of the shape of the feet, the way the child walks, the alignment of the legs (knock knees or bow legs) and posture in school-age children. Many of these are part of normal growth. The examination helps to distinguish what simply needs monitoring from what needs further investigation. Examinations are carried out by Prof. Dragoljub Živanović, a specialist in paediatric surgery with a special interest in paediatric orthopaedics and traumatology.

Ultrasound and imaging for babies and children

Ultrasound does not use radiation, so in babies it is often the first choice when a part of the body can be examined with ultrasound. Maja Radiology performs hip ultrasound, head ultrasound through the fontanelle and thymus ultrasound. For bones and joints the doctor may suggest an X-ray, and to assess growth, a bone age X-ray. Please check when booking whether MRI scans are done in children and from what age. Scan prices are listed in the radiology price list.

Paediatrician at Maja Health Centre

Maja Health Centre provides paediatrician appointments, a well-child clinic and routine health checks, including for young athletes up to the age of 18. It also issues certificates for nursery, day trips and school trips. When needed, the paediatrician recommends an orthopaedic examination or imaging, and both are done in the same building. Information about the paediatricians and the prices of their appointments is on the Maja Health Centre website.

Frequently asked questions

When is a hip ultrasound done in babies?

A hip ultrasound is usually done in the first months of life, while the hip joint can still be seen well on ultrasound. The exact timing and the need for a follow-up scan are decided by the paediatrician or orthopaedic specialist. The doctor may suggest earlier or more frequent monitoring, for example if the baby was in the breech position or if someone in the family has had hip problems. At Maja Hospital, hip ultrasound is done at Maja Radiology.

What happens during a baby hip ultrasound, and does my baby need any preparation?

The baby lies on their side and the doctor moves a probe with a little gel over the hip, first on one side and then on the other. The scan does not use radiation. Special preparation is usually not needed. A fed and settled baby lies still more easily, and clothes should be easy to take off.

Do I need a referral to see a paediatric orthopaedic specialist at Maja Hospital?

Maja Hospital is a private healthcare facility, and appointments are booked directly by phone. For an examination you pay for yourself, a referral from your child's registered paediatrician is usually not needed; you can find out when booking whether Maja Hospital requires one. If private insurance is paying for the examination, the insurer may ask for a referral or prior approval. If you have a referral, report or results from the paediatrician, please bring them, as they help the doctor understand the reason for the visit.

What are the most common reasons parents bring a child to a paediatric orthopaedic specialist?

Most often for a preventive hip check in babies, the shape of the feet, toe walking or in-toeing, leg alignment (knock knees or bow legs) and posture in school-age children. An examination is also done when a paediatrician recommends an assessment of the bones and joints.

Are flat feet normal in young children?

In young children the foot often looks flat, because the arch forms gradually during early childhood. This is usually part of normal development. At the examination, the doctor assesses the shape and flexibility of the foot and decides whether monitoring or further tests are needed.

What is a fontanelle ultrasound, and up to what age can it be done?

A fontanelle ultrasound is a scan of a baby's head and brain through the soft spot on the top of the head. It can be done while the fontanelle is still open enough, usually in the first months of life. The scan does not use radiation and is done on the recommendation of a paediatrician or neonatologist. At Maja Hospital, fontanelle ultrasound is done at Maja Radiology.

Is there a paediatrician at Maja Hospital?

Paediatrician appointments are not held at Maja Hospital but at Maja Health Centre, which is in the same building at Vizantijski bulevar 39 in Niš. The well-child clinic and routine health checks are there too. At Maja Hospital, children can have an orthopaedic examination with Prof. Dragoljub Živanović and imaging at Maja Radiology.

How much does a hip or fontanelle ultrasound for a baby cost?

Prices for hip, fontanelle and thymus ultrasound and for the bone age X-ray are in the Maja Hospital radiology price list, together with the date of the last update. Please check the price of the orthopaedic examination when you book by phone.

What should I bring to an appointment with a paediatric orthopaedic specialist?

Bring your child's health insurance card, previous results and scans on CD or USB stick, the discharge summary from the maternity hospital for a baby, and for older children the shoes they wear most often and insoles if they use them. Dress your child in clothes that are easy to take off.
