Facts and description

Breast implant removal is a procedure in which the plastic surgeon removes a silicone implant from one or both sides, and capsulectomy is the removal of the scar capsule that forms around the implant. At Maja Hospital, Vizantijski bulevar 39 in Niš, both procedures are carried out by specialists in plastic and reconstructive surgery. When the procedure is usually considered

  • The breasts have become hard, painful or changed in shape (capsular contracture)
  • Implant damage or rupture
  • A wish to have the implants removed or replaced
  • The surgeon recommends the procedure after a consultation and imaging

What the procedure cannot do

  • After removal the breasts may be smaller or looser
  • A new implant is not always placed in the same procedure
  • The surgeon decides on the extent of the procedure

The path to the procedure

  1. Step 1: Plastic surgery consultation

The surgeon talks about your reasons and expectations, examines the area and explains the options.

  2. Step 2: Plan and preparation

The method, anaesthetic and tests are agreed. With general anaesthesia or sedation you are also seen by an anaesthetist.

  3. Step 3: Day of the procedure

After admission the surgeon explains the procedure once more, and you sign a consent form.

  4. Step 4: After the procedure

You receive instructions for wound care and dressings; the surgeon decides on the length of stay.

  5. Step 5: Follow-up

At the follow-up the surgeon checks healing, removes stitches when needed and discusses scar care.

In detail

When is an implant removed or replaced?

Breast implants do not last a lifetime. At some point removal or replacement may be needed, for example because the shape or firmness of the breast changes, the implant is damaged or at the patient's wish. The surgeon assesses the reason and timing after a consultation and sometimes breast imaging (ultrasound or MRI).

Capsular contracture and capsulectomy

The body forms a thin layer of scar tissue, a capsule, around every implant. In some women the capsule becomes thicker and harder over time and squeezes the implant. This is called capsular contracture, and the breast may become hard, painful or change shape. Capsulectomy is the surgical removal of the capsule, partly or completely, usually with implant removal or replacement.

What is capsulectomy?

Capsulectomy is the surgical removal of the scar capsule that forms around a breast implant. It is usually done when the capsule becomes thicker and harder (capsular contracture), together with implant removal or replacement.

Can the implant be replaced in the same procedure?

Often, but not always. The surgeon assesses at the consultation whether a new implant is placed in the same procedure.

Without a new implant the breasts may be smaller or looser. The surgeon sometimes suggests a breast lift in the same or a later procedure.
