In detail
What is an ultrasound scan?
Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves, without X-ray radiation, and is most often used for the thyroid, abdominal organs, breasts, joints and soft tissues. The doctor applies gel to the skin and examines the area with a probe, and the image is seen immediately on the screen. At Maja Radiology ultrasound scans are performed by a radiology specialist, who also writes the report.
Abdominal, thyroid, breast and urinary ultrasound
An abdominal ultrasound shows the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen and kidneys; you usually come fasting. A thyroid and neck soft tissue ultrasound is most often done for thyroid nodules or enlargement. A breast ultrasound is done on a doctor's recommendation, sometimes with a scan of the armpit soft tissues. An ultrasound of the urinary and reproductive organs and prostate is usually done with a full bladder.
Scans for children
The radiology price list also includes scans most often done for babies and children: hip ultrasound, ultrasound of the head through the fontanelle and thymus ultrasound. These scans use no radiation and are usually done on the recommendation of a paediatrician or orthopaedist. They are described in detail on the page on paediatric orthopaedics and ultrasound for babies.
Urinary tract ultrasound (kidneys and bladder)
A urinary tract ultrasound, listed in the price list as an ultrasound of the urogenital tract, shows the kidneys, the bladder and the reproductive organs. For an ultrasound of the urinary tract and pelvis you usually come with a full bladder. You receive exact instructions when booking.
