In detail

Abscess incision and drainage

An abscess is a collection of pus under the skin, usually painful, red, warm and swollen. It is usually treated by surgical opening (incision) and draining the pus, as medicines alone are often not enough. A smaller abscess is opened under local anaesthetic, and a larger or deeper one sometimes under general anaesthetic. The wound is then dressed until it heals, as instructed by the surgeon. An abscess next to the anus is described on the proctology page.

Ingrown toenail surgery (one or both sides, under local anaesthetic)

An ingrown toenail usually affects the big toe, when the edge of the nail grows into the surrounding skin, which becomes painful, red and swollen and sometimes infected. When problems persist or keep coming back, the surgeon removes the ingrown part of the nail under local anaesthetic, from one side or both sides of the nail. Wide footwear is worn afterwards, and the wound is dressed as instructed.

Wound stitching, dressing and stitch removal

A fresh cut that gapes or bleeds is often closed with stitches under local anaesthetic; the price list has items for small, medium and large wounds. Dressing means cleaning the wound and changing the bandage, with items for small, medium and large dressings. Stitch removal is a separate item; the surgeon decides when stitches can be removed. With a deep or heavily bleeding wound, an animal bite or an injury after which you cannot move or feel a finger, call the emergency service on 194.

Haematoma evacuation and hidradenitis surgery

A haematoma is a collection of blood under the skin or in tissue, for example after an injury or operation. When it is large, painful or does not go away, the surgeon can remove it. Hidradenitis suppurativa is a long-term inflammatory skin disease in skin folds; when the changes persist, the surgeon removes the affected skin. The price list has items for small, medium and large hidradenitis of the buttock or perianal region under sedation, priced on request. Hidradenitis around the anus is described in detail on the proctology page.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a minor surgical procedure cost in Niš?

The price depends on the type and extent of the procedure. The Maja Hospital price lists have items for minor surgery under local and general anaesthetic and separate items for abscesses, ingrown toenails, wound stitching and dressing, stitch removal and haematoma. All are in the price table on this page.

How is an abscess opened and does it hurt?

A smaller abscess is opened under local anaesthetic: you feel the injection, and during the procedure usually only pressure. The surgeon opens the abscess and drains the pus, and the wound is then dressed until it heals.

How is ingrown toenail surgery done?

Under local anaesthetic the surgeon removes the part of the nail that has grown into the skin, from one side or both sides. The plastic and aesthetic surgery price list has items for one-sided and two-sided surgery.

Where can I have stitches removed in Niš?

Stitch removal is a separate item in the general surgery and plastic surgery price lists. The appointment is booked by phone. The surgeon decides when stitches can be removed.

What is hidradenitis and how is it treated?

Hidradenitis suppurativa is a long-term inflammatory skin disease in skin folds, with painful lumps and pus. Treatment often starts with a dermatologist, and with persistent changes the surgeon removes the affected skin.
